The Concept Set in a triangular brownfield site in Indianapolis, IN, the Standard, was a new off campus student housing development catering to the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis campus. In order to address the inherent inefficiency of a triangular site, two unique unit types were developed to address the corners. These units were repeated in a pin wheel fashion so to create the perception that the corners do not repeat within a pedestrian’s field of vision.
A break in the building massing allows for ample western light to permeate central courtyard allowing for optimal pool location and outdoor amenity spaces. The ground floor is activated with the main lobby and club room spaces and ground level units.
The cladding systems consist of a combination of masonry and glass along the podium levels with an decorative tile system at the main entry, and fiber cement panel, siding and metal panel on the upper levels.
The Structure
This project consisted of a 4-story concrete podium lined with active uses along approximately two thirds of the of the facade. Above the podium are 9 stories of cold-form bearing wall construction to minimize the weight on the podium. This also helped maximize usable space within the units since columns were no longer required above the podium.
Status Entitled 2016, Abandoned due to land remediation costs.
